April, 1805. After Barbary Pirates had seized the USS Philadelphia, President Thomas Jefferson ordered the United States Marine Corps to engage in its first-ever action outside of North America. Lieutenant Presley O'Bannon and William Eaton led a small contingent of Marines over 500 miles of open North African desert. Once the attack began, it took the Marines less than three hours to capture the capital city of Derna. Returned to power, Hamet Karamanli was so impressed with the bravery displayed in battle by Lt. O'Bannon that the Pasha presented O'Bannon with an elaborate sword, the model for the current "Mameluke" sword worn by USMC Officers.
