September, 1847: Referred to as the Halls of Montezuma by the Mexican Army garrisoning it, Chapultepec Castle was a strategically significant stronghold. Perched atop the peak of a 200-foot hill overlooking Mexico City, the castle defended the city's western approach. In a 90 minutes engagement, 400 United States Marines attached to a larger Army force were able to secure the castle. At 0100 hours the next day, General Santa Ana withdrew from the capital. By 0700 hours the city was under US control, directly affecting the end of hostilities in February 1848.
