June 1918: Across the northern banks of the Marne River, 59 miles from Paris, close to the small village of Chateau-Thierry sat the tiny hunting arena known as Belleau Wood. Over three weeks Marines from the 5th and 6th Battalions fought tenaciously, including brutal hand-to-hand fighting, in order to deny the advancing German Army the strategic advantage of the wood. Many Marine Corps legends were born in Belleau Wood. When ordered by a senior French officer to leave the front, Captain Lloyd Williams replied "Retreat? Hell, we just got here". Two-time Medal of Honor recipient 1stSgt Dan Daly urged forward the Marines of the 73rd Machine Gun Company with the words, "Come on, you sons of bitches, do you want to live forever?" Most famously, the Battle of Belleau Wood is where the legend of the 'Devil Dog' was born. Referring to the fierce tenacity displayed under fire by the Marines, the Germans called them "Teufelshunde'. This candle will be labeled Belleau Wood when shipped.
