3 BE's That Can Help You Cope Through the COVID-19 Pandemic
According to Johns Hopkins University COVID-19 tracker, there have been more than 237,436 confirmed patients that are reported recovered. That means 4X as many people have recovered from this virus then have died. Again, this is not meant to minimize the grief of those who have lost loved ones to this virus. This is only intended to provide hope in this turbulent and stressful time.
The spread of hope and inspiration is something which everyone can help. It costs you no money and takes nothing from you. Emailing or sending a quick text to an old friend to checking in with them takes literally seconds, but can mean the world to that person. The scourge of the modern times, social media, has helped ease the isolation and despair of people across the planet.
First responders have shown us again what it means to be truly heroic. People who continuously wade into the fray against something as indiscriminate as a virus of this magnitude day after day do so with no expectation of reward. They return to their posts fully aware of the potential consequence awaiting them.
People are starting to realize what is truly important in life. The fast-paced life that we have built for ourselves has hit a brick wall. All sporting outlets around the world have ceased. They postponed the Olympic Games by a full year! The unprecedented times in which we are living has actually given us a chance to reconnect with family and friends on an intimate level that has long been forgotten.
As of today, the Centers for Disease Control has reported 277,203 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the United States with 6593 fatalities. That is means there is a 2% chance that a positive diagnosis will result in a fatal outcome. Let’s put this into perspective. Any individual chance of picking the 6 winning number out of a 49 number pool (i.e. a lottery) is 1 in 13,983,816. The odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot is 1 in 302.6 million, and winning the Powerball is 1 in 292.2 million. If you play both, your odds for winning both jumps to a mind-bending 1 in 88 quadrillion. I will concede that playing the lotteries does not generally incur a life-and-death potential, but that is not the main issue. If you are relatively healthy, you are extremely unlikely to have a fatal outcome even if contracting COVID-19. A 95-year-old World War II veteran just recovered from this virus. Just google it and see for yourself. It’s a great story.
This does not mean that we should throw caution to the wind and go about our lives without taking active steps to mitigate the spread of this serious virus. Social distancing is so important. Look at the numbers of where the virus has spread. Densely populated center like New York City, Boston, Detroit, New Orleans, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Chicago have been affected so much more intensely then less populated or open cities like Omaha, Charleston (West Virginia & South Carolina), Albuquerque, Kansas City, or Pensacola. Hand washing was the single most effective practice to reduce pre-antibiotic hospital deaths. The Centers for Disease Control recently recommended that all individuals, weather healthy or high-risk, should wear non-surgical cotton mask anytime they are in public spaces. What is the actual harm in complying with this request if it helps reduce the spread of COVID-19?
I would just like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that we will get through this. The world recovered from the Spanish Influenza Pandemic and created the era known as the 'Roarin’ 20’s'. The continual doom-and-gloom predictions are not reporting the reality of this pandemic. If you continue to practice the ‘3 BE’s’, you and everyone in your inner circle will come through this, regardless how long it may take. What are the 3 BE’s you ask? BE good to those around you, BE smart and ensure good personal hygiene, and BElieve that everything will turn out for the best.
